Observance of Lenten Season at SFA

Lent is the forty-day period before Easter, excluding Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. (More info)

The students and teachers of St. Francis Academy attended a Holy Mass on March 9 (Ash Wednesday) at Sts. Joseph and Michael’s Church. After the mass, the priest marked our foreheads with ashes. It is a reminder that we are created from dust and to dust we shall return.

During Lent we follow Jesus from his adult ministry through his suffering during Holy Week to his crucifixion and death on Good Friday…. Lent is a time of stripping down to essentials, as each Christian focuses on his or her individual relationship with God. It is a time when Christians remember our baptisms, when Jesus washed away our sins, giving us newness of life to celebrate in the triumph of Palm Sunday and the glory of Easter. (More info)

In Solidarity With The Poor

Students from Grades 5 – 8 voluntarily fasted each Thursday of the Lenten season in solidarity with the poor throughout our world. These students discussed matters affecting the poor and marginalized. A successful food drive was organized raising over 1,400 cans and boxes of food. Congratulations to the Kindergarten class, they collected over 240 items.

After the week-long standarized testing (Terranova), St. Francis Academy resumes its regular academic schedule. But just before the Terranova, we’ve been working hard, and it shows.

Mass Schedule – Lent

Each morning one of our classes attends Mass at Sts. Joseph and Michael Church at 830 AM. Students and teachers leave for Mass no later than 8:15 AM. If a novena or the rosary is being said when they enter the church, children participate.

On Wednesday Eucharistic Adoration follows Mass, children will participate and leave the church in respectful silence. Students are encouraged to receive both the sacred Body and Blood of our Lord properly. How fortunate we are to be able to attend Mass at least once a week during the holy season of Lent.

Alleluia Parade 2009

Last Tuesday (Feb. 24), Pre-K and Kindergarten students reminded the school of the Season of Lent. Led by school principal Ms. Savage, the children went from room to room and prayed with each class, as the band and the choir sang praises.

Another parade for Easter is set in April.
