Mission trip to Uganda

Mission Trip to Uganda

Back in December 2017, Loryn Gugliotta, daughter of our Gr. 3 Homeroom teacher, Ms. Angela Nielsen, received generous donations from the community of St. Francis Academy to help the less fortunate people in Uganda.

Read below for the details of Loryn’s Mission Trip ….

Grade 6 student Carolina Quito interviewed Ms. Nielsen and she has learned so many things about Loryn’s mission trip. Carolina learned that Loryn, a 21-year old Nursing Major from University of Scranton, is a member of 15-student team accompanied by two professors. She wanted to apply her nursing skills to help the less fortunate.

Carolina also learned that the group left for Uganda on January 8, 2018, and came back to the United States a little over two weeks after, on January 24. While in Uganda, the group visited and helped primary schools, hospitals, clinics, and built a mud home for a needy family. The students also brought supplies that they had collected, and gave them to many needy families.

Mud Home

Loryn and her team built a mud home for a needy family.

The donations the group has received here from SFA community were used for nursing school, primary school, and for a young woman who couldn’t afford to pay for her education.

Below is Loryn’s letter:

Dear Ms. Savage, Parents, Teachers, and Staff,

It is with the heartfelt gratitude that I write this letter of thanks on behalf of the needy in Uganda. I was overwhelmed by your generosity.

Your generous donations will be put to good use by providing food, medicine, and necessities to those who we will be visiting in hospitals, schools, and various parishes. A special thank you to Sister Catherine for donating and cleaning the vestments and albs for the priests there.

I plan to share photos and videos of my travels with Saint Francis Academy in the spring. The students will be able to share in my experience to get a better understanding of the Ugandan people.

Please pray for safe travels for the University of Scranton students and faculty members who are departing for the mission trip on January 6, 2018. Once again, thank you for your great kindness and generosity. I will be forever grateful.

Best regards,

Loryn Gugliotta

Thank you, Loryn, for sharing your wonderful experience in Uganda!
