March 2018

Most High Glorious God,
enlighten the darkness of my heart
and give me true faith, certain hope
and perfect charity, sense and knowledge.
Lord, that I may carry out
Your holy and true command.

Dear Parents,

St. Francis of Assisi prayed this beautiful prayer of adoration and petition before the cross in the tumble down church of San Damiano, and our 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders pray this prayer each day before science class with Mrs. Cassidy. For almost 800 years these words have been prayed by Franciscans and people seeking a deeper connection with our Glorious God. As we enter this third week of Lent this is an almost perfect prayer for our journey through the penitential season. The request to “enlighten the darkness of my heart” particularly strikes a chord in our daily life. We know only too well the darkness of our hearts; the petty jealousies, affronts, sarcasm, selfishness, impatience. I am sure we are all well aware of our deficiencies as beloved children of God. During this season of change let us pray the Lord will make us aware and attentive as we fall into habits of negativity and fear. Let’s be great examples for the children we love by letting them hear only kind words come from our lips and loving gestures, such as a smile or hug, greeting them throughout the day.

St. Francis also asked our Glorious God for “sense and knowledge” a very practical request. The dictionary defines one aspect of sense as “a keen intuitive awareness of or sensitivity to the presence or importance of something.” To have sense and knowledge of God’s presence all around us and in ourselves could certainly change our lives and our interactions, perhaps even restoring civility, integrity and dignity. Let us all place ourselves in the hands of God and pray that as we approach Easter we will be ready to carry out His holy and true command.

Peace be with you,

Deborah Savage
