In this season of Thanksgiving we at St. Francis Academy reach out to you alumni to celebrate the centennial of the presence of our Missionary Franciscan Sisters in Union City. In 1914 the sisters came from a small orphanage in Jersey City and built the convent and the chapel to house displaced children, later opening the school where so many were well educated in faith and academics. Last year our final sisters left the convent for retirement in Tenafly. Please join us in honoring these wonderful women while the opportunity still exists. Over twenty of our sisters and Leadership Circle will be in attendance for the celebration of the Mass and dinner. Though your favorite sister may not be present we honor the memory of all who served at St. Francis Orphanage and Academy.
Our current strategic plan has been accepted by the Provincial Staff and construction will begin upon the convent building in the new year. Our plan will give us room to spread our wings with a media center, school store, small groups instruction rooms, a Basic Skills classroom, a music room and new Pre-K 4 and Kindergarten space. Though the sisters may not be physically present in the building their spirit and influence will always be felt in the hallowed halls of St. Francis Academy.
Please join us for Mass in our chapel at 5:00 PM. Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Michael Carrano of Brooklyn. Father Carrano’s connection with the sisters is very interesting and I’m certain he will speak about it. Dinner and reception will follow catered by The Brownstone, Newark.
If your life has been changed by the Missionary Franciscan Sisters, as has mine, I know I will see you on Saturday, December 5th.
Have a blessed Thanksgiving.
